In the Gallery Right Now:

Bare-metal - Adam Olson

Where is the line between the ‘natural’ and the ‘manufactured’?

What is the boundary between the self and ‘other’ drawn? Is there inherent sanctity to the wholeness of our bodies? Is there sanctity in the wholeness of a machine? As I grew up, I watched technology evolve from a novelty that promised to propel society toward a utopian future into an inextricable part of life, used for surveillance and the financial exploitation of every aspect of our perception. I used technology as an escape from my circumstances, to find community in an unfriendly real world. I attached parts of myself to it, rewiring my brain to suit its algorithms.

In my paintings, I attempt to reconcile my feelings of empathetic connection to, and revulsion toward, modern technology. Within the tech economy, humans are flattened by the demands of capital and become quantified, mechanized, and commodified. In this way, the demarcation between human and machine, identity and brand, person and product, is blurred.

These works show the effects of tech-integration as violent and cold. The human figures are anonymous and faceless, placed in positions of danger and isolation. The misty atmosphere is contrasted by a blistered surface texture. This is peeled away to reveal the hard mechanicsunderneath the skin, mirroring how the body is viewed as an increasingly obsolete tool for

labor.
